Homework in the Primary Grades
Homework:
Homework is not a regular part of my primary classroom. However, home practice of skills, such as reading, writing and math, are important to work on at home on a regular basis. Home support and encouragement is crucial to the development of these skills in children of this age. Please check your child's planner or my website to find out word wall words the students are practicing each week and any particular practice assigned in a week.
I will rarely send home extra work to be completed at home. Occasionally, if a student has taken particularly long finishing an assignment, I may need to send it home to be completed. Most of the time, homework will consist of daily practice of skills that will support your child's learning in the classroom. Such practice can consist of things such as:
1. Reading at home (with your child reading or listening to a story)
2. Discussing words of the week from the Planner and practicing writing the words in sentences, writing notes or letters or helping you write grocery lists will help students to master the word wall words.
3. Math Games with cards or dice
4. Practicing saying and writing your address and telephone number
Home practice should not seem too much like "work." Students work hard all day at school and they need time for fun and recreation outside of school time. Trying to find a balance is always the key.
Home Reading:
Students are challenged to read at least 300 minutes in a month. Please record minutes on the monthly calendar that is sent home. This program will begin in October. There will be a small incentive for reading 300 minutes or more each month.
Spelling:
We will have occasional spelling quizzes on random word wall words. When I give a quiz it could be on any of the words. I will not give a list ahead of time.
