What is Mindset in Education?
Mindset in education is essentially the way you approach intelligence, learning, failure and success - your attitude about these things. It is your thinking and beliefs about how one becomes intelligent or if one can become more intelligent over time, and how one copes with successes and failures. The dictionary definition of Mindset is - "A fixed mental attitude or disposition that predetermines a person's responses to and interpretations of situations. An inclination or a habit." There are two types of Mindsets that Carol Dweck has developed - a Fixed Mindset and a Growth Mindset. The images below do a great job of explaining the the two mindsets.
A growth mindset is what enables a child to be successful at school and in life. I will be teaching students about growth mindset this year and we will practice using language that supports a growth mindset. Doing hard things, embracing challenges and making mistakes will be encouraged and practiced and will be a regular part of our learning this year. We will learn how to push past frustration and not give up in order to get to the other side where understanding and success occur.
